Technical requirements
    What you must do before you take this course

To get full benefit from this course you must have the required hardware, basic setup, Internet connection, and media.


Hardware requirements
Requirements Why? What if my system does not meet this requirement?

Processor:
PC with 200 MHz Pentium II processor or Macintosh with 150 MHz PowerPC

If you take the course on a slower computer multimedia elements will display slowly. If you have much less than the required memory, you could experience errors with large media elements.

Memory:
64 Megabytes
With less memory, you will not be able to run other applications, such as a word processor, at the same time as you take the course.
Sound:
16-bit SoundBlaster Pro compatible
Sound is used in several of the demonstrations of multimedia documents.

Basic setup

Operating system: Windows 95, 98, or NT 4.0 or Macintosh System 7 or later This course will run on some UNIX systems though some multimedia elements will not be available.
Screen size: At least 600 by 800 pixels
How
With a smaller screen size you cannot see all of the course window without scrolling.
Screen colors: At least 16-bit color (thousands of colors)
How
If you have 8-bit color (256 colors) you can still take the course, though some graphics will have streaks or bands of solid color. No colors will be entirely accurate.
Browser: Internet Explorer 4.0 or Netscape Navigator 4.0

This course uses the style-sheet and Dynamic HTML features of Version 4.0 browsers.
JavaScript Version 1.1 installed and enabled

Interactive portions of this course require Version 1.1. Without it, JavaScript errors will be frequent. The most recent versions of Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support JavaScript version 1.1.
Java enabled
How
Although this course does not use Java applets, Java is required by some of the examples it shows.
Cookies enabled
How
This course uses temporary storage elements called cookies to keep track of who you are from page to page. You must enable cookies.

Internet connection
Requirements Why? What if my system does not meet this requirement?

Internet connection: Access to the Internet either through your organization's intranet or through an Internet Service Provider with whom you have an account.

If you cannot access the Internet, you cannot take this course.

If your company's firewall blocks certain media, you may not be able to view these media.

Connection speed: Connection speed of at least 56 kbps.

If you are patient you can take this course with a slower connection. You will have to wait longer for large graphics and multimedia elements to download.

This course contains 10 AVI (Video for Windows) movies, each about 15 seconds. They are not essential.

Note: MacOS users can use Beatnik to play WAV audio.
