		What you must do before you take this course

To get full benefit from this course you must have the required hardware, basic setup , Internet connection, and media.

Hardware requirements
Requirements	Why? What if my system does not meet this requirement?
Processor: PC with 200 MHz Pentium II processor or Macintosh with 150 MHz PowerPC	If you take the course on a slower computer multimedia elements will display slowly. If you have much less than the required memory, you could experience errors with large media elements.
Memory: 64 Megabytes	With less memory, you will not be able to run other applications, such as a word processor, at the same time as you take the course.
Sound: 16-bit SoundBlaster Pro compatible	Sound is used in several of the demonstrations of multimedia documents.

Basic setup	Test basic setup
Requirements	Why? What if my systems does not meet this requirement?
Operating system: Windows 95, 98, or NT 4.0 or Macintosh System 7 or later	This course will run on some UNIX systems though some multimedia elements will not be available.
Screen size: At least 600 by 800 pixels How	With a smaller screen size you cannot see all of the course window without scrolling.
Screen colors: At least 16-bit color (thousands of colors) How	If you have 8-bit color (256 colors) you can still take the course, though some graphics will have streaks or bands of solid color. No colors will be entirely accurate.
Browser: Internet Explorer 4.0 or Netscape Navigator 4.0 How Get IE (Mac or Windows) Get Navigator	This course uses the style-sheet and Dynamic HTML features of Version 4.0 browsers.
JavaScript Version 1.1 installed and enabled How	Interactive portions of this course require Version 1.1. Without it, JavaScript errors will be frequent. The most recent versions of Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support JavaScript version 1.1.
Java enabled How	Although this course does not use Java applets, Java is required by some of the examples it shows.
Cookies enabled How	This course uses temporary storage elements called cookies to keep track of who you are from page to page. You must enable cookies.

Internet connection
Requirements	Why? What if my system does not meet this requirement?
Internet connection: Access to the Internet either through your organization's intranet or through an Internet Service Provider with whom you have an account. Test (This link should open a new window and display the William Horton Consulting home page.)	If you cannot access the Internet, you cannot take this course. If your company's firewall blocks certain media, you may not be able to view these media.
Connection speed: Connection speed of at least 56 kbps. Test	If you are patient you can take this course with a slower connection. You will have to wait longer for large graphics and multimedia elements to download.
E-mail address:An e-mail address accessible from the Internet Test (This link should bring up an e-mail window. Write a message and send it to yourself. Then later, check to see if you received it.)	Your password and other information are sent to your e-mail address.

Media players and resources
Requirements	Why? What if my systems does not meet this requirement?
Macromedia Shockwave Director 6.0 player How Test Get	This course uses 20 Shockwave Director animations to illustrate important concepts.
Player for AVI movies and WAV audio How Media Player: Test WAV and Test AVI Get for PC Beatnik: Test Wav Get for Mac	This course contains 10 AVI (Video for Windows) movies, each about 15 seconds. They are not essential. Note: MacOS users can use QuickTime to play AVI movies. This course contains 17 audio clips in the WAV format. These audio clips are not essential because, in each case, a transcript is available. Note: MacOS users can use Beatnik to play WAV audio.
Player for QuickTime 4.0 movies How Test Get	This course contains 12 QuickTime movies, each about 30 seconds. They are not essential.
Fonts: Verdana and Webdings How Test Get	Without Verdana, text will not look as pretty and some lines may break awkwardly. Without webdings, some special symbols will be missing.
Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 How Test Get	Several case studies are in Acrobat (PDF) format. The case studies are required activities.
