Key points
Navigating this course is quite simple. Click on underlined text or buttons to jump to another part of the course.

To see where a link takes you, point to the link with the mouse. An explanation will appear in the status bar at the bottom of the browser window.

Always begin this course by opening start.htm to ensure that the proper scripts are loaded and the course appears in the correct window.

Screen layout

The screen is divided into three main areas:

Presentation area where the main content of the course appears.

Main navigation buttons, which are buttons for the main components of the course.

Access area containing the table of contents, index, and search facility.

Main navigation buttons

The table of contents and index share the frame at the left of the window. They also share a common set of buttons.

Send and e-mail message to the instructor or the Foundation of Knowledge and Competence Development

Jumps to a list of additional resources for creating electronic courses

Jumps to a schedule of upcoming chat sessions

Jumps to the log in page for the class forum

Jumps up one level

Move forward in the topic sequence

Move back in a topic sequence

Access mechanisms

You can find pages in four main ways:

Click on the Next and Previous buttons to go through the course in sequence.

Select the Contents tab to reveal a hierarchical table of contents. To jump to an individual page, click on its item in the table of contents.

Select the Index tab to reveal an alphabetical list of subjects. Clicking on a subject displays the page about that subject.

Select the Search tab to enter a word or phrase and find pages that contain that word or phrase.

 

Narration buttons

Some topics have optional voice narration. Such topics display these buttons for controlling narration at the top of the page:

Plays the voice narration.

Displays the text of the narration.

Organization

The course is organized in a hierarchy of three levels as shown in the course Contents. If the table of contents is displayed, you can tell where you are by looking for the highlighted item in the table of contents. If no item is highlighted, you are at the top level of the current lesson.

Taking lessons

We suggest taking the lessons in the order they are presented in the table of contents. You may select each page in sequence from the table of contents, or you can repeatedly click the Next button in the navigation bar.

To look up information on a specific subject, select the index and find the subject alphabetically.

Taking tests

Tests contain their own instructions and are relatively simple. Just answer the test questions and select the Evaluate button. Some tests include a Hint button to reveal clues to the correct answer.

Quitting the course

To leave the course, make a note of where you left off and then close the window. There is no automatic bookmarking facility with this course.

Getting help

Specific help on a topic is available by clicking on the Help button in the navigation bar. This help explains how to manipulate and navigate that particular kind of topic. For instance, it explains how to log on to the forum or take a particuar type of test. The help does not cover the content of the topic.

You can also click Support in the main table of contents. From there you can access the Help desk as well as the FAQ.

Also, there is a support thread in the class forum. Check there frequently to see if others have had the same problem.

Limitations

The limitations of Web browsers limit how you can navigate the course.

  • The Back command works on frames. Sometimes you will need to click Back twice to get back where you came from.
  • Bookmarks do not work reliably with a multi-frame document like this.
